New to Opera?
Opera is one of the most vibrant, extravagant and unique artforms available to audiences today, not to mention the most outrageous.
Few other genres offer plot lines including love, murder, deception, hot affairs, calculating revenge and pure joy in one show –
except perhaps Desperate Housewives!
To help you get the most out of your first opera experience, here are a few helpful hints:
What is Opera?
Quite simply, opera is sung drama. Imagine your favourite soap on TV with dialogue sung instead of spoken and you would be watching opera.
What do I wear?
While some people enjoy the opportunity to dress up for the occasion, others prefer the comfort of their favourite jeans and teeshirt
– it really is up to you. We don’t mind how you look, we love the fact you’ve come to listen.
How do I know what’s happening?
When the opera is in a language other than English, we use surtitles to convey what the singers are saying.
These are usually projected above the stage – similar to a foreign film. The opera programme also gives a full breakdown
of the story scene by scene called the synopsis.
When do I clap?
There is nothing more gratifying to a singer than an enthusiastic audience so you are encouraged to show your appreciation whenever
you feel the urge. Conventional applause occurs between scenes or at the end of a particularly impressive aria (song).
Don’t be late
Opera performances generally start on time. If you arrive at the theatre late you may be locked out until an appropriate
moment in the music when your entry will disturb the least. The ushers at the theatre will know what to do and will seat
you just as soon as they can. Once in the theatre, please make sure your cell phone, watch alarm or pager are turned off
prior to the performance. Opera has beautiful quiet moments which can be disrupted by even the slightest noise, so out of
respect for performers and other patrons, please leave unwrapping sweets or talking until applause or interval occurs.
What does it cost?
Opera is one of the most extravagant artforms to stage requiring singers, dancers, actors, a full orchestra and a
comprehensive technical team. While this is an expensive undertaking we endeavour to make participating affordable
with seats available in all price catergories from as low as $25.00. Group booking discounts are also available.
