I am most happy to welcome you to a new year of performances by Southern Opera, New Zealand’s newest operatic success.

I was very pleased to read such enthusiastic reviews of last season’s Carmen and the plans for 2008 look equally exciting. I am sure you will enjoy the beautiful music and comic situations in Time Pieces: Ravel’s opera is a charming work and the pieces in the second half will be familiar to you, I am sure and will add to your enjoyment of the work.  

I know already that you will thrill to Il Trovatore!  It is a towering opera with some of Verdi’s most wonderful and dramatic music, equally exciting to perform or to watch.

I am also very interested to hear about the creation of the new Southern Opera Ensemble and your educational aims for the singers.

I believe strongly in the importance of giving aspiring singers a chance to perform on stage and to experience the excitement and thrill of taking part in this wonderful art form.  Those of us lucky enough to have spent our lives in opera have a responsibility to nurture those who will come after us.

I would like to end by wishing you, and Southern Opera, a happy and successful 2008.
